Update on Bill SB 437
To all Chiropractor's and Chiropractic Assistant's in Nevada:

The Nevada Chiropractic Association was a key player in a major victory for the Chiropractors of Nevada

As you all know, SB 437, a Physical Therapist bill, posed a great public safety threat to Nevadans as originally introduced.  In addition, they proposed amendments that would have greatly expanded their scope of practice and infringed on ours.

Negotiations and lobbying efforts were led by Dr. Ben Lurie, Chairman of the Physicians’ Chiropractic Board of Nevada, their lobbyist Mendy Elliott and myself. NCA President Dr. James Overland conducted intense and lengthy negotiations with the PT Association’s legislative chair. His efforts were combined with his public testimony and that of NCA Secretary Johnathan Parham.

In the end, we were gratified and relieved when the Board of Physical Therapists withdrew their offensive language and agreed to stand by agreements made at the behest of legislators.  Today, the heavily amended bill passed the Senate in a 21-0 vote.

The NCA will continue to remain vigilant to ensure that the final passage of the bill in the Assembly remains intact with our agreed upon amendments.

The success to date on SB 437 would not have been possible without your key participation in writing and calling legislators to make them aware of the true impact and unintended consequences this ill-conceived legislation would have had.  It also provided us all with the opportunity to continue to provide education about our profession and raise the profile of Chiropractic Physicians and the essential health benefits you provide.

For those doctors not necessarily familiar with the legislative process, it is virtually impossible to advance or block legislation without having a presence in Carson City.  The NCA has had such a presence for many sessions in the Nevada Legislature which has served the NCA well in my opinion.  It is especially important when a critical challenge such as SB 437 confronts your profession.  It is my ongoing privilege to serve as your legislative advocate daily in the legislature.  I thank you for your support.
